FLUSHING, N.Y., October 5, 2009 - The New York Mets today announced that Bench Coach Sandy Alomar Sr. and First Base Coach Luis Alicea will not be returning for the 2010 season. Alomar Sr. will be offered another position within the organization.

Hitting Coach Howard Johnson, Pitching Coach Dan Warthen and Bullpen Coach Randy Niemann will return to Manager Jerry Manuel's staff in the same positions next year. Third Base Coach Razor Shines and Catching Instructor Sandy Alomar Jr. will be part of the Major League staff in 2010 in yet to be determined roles.

Well it's official now...Jerry back.   Warthen back.   Thoughts?

Yeah, well, what do you expect? The Mets organization has proven time and time again that they have no idea what they are doing. Managers don't have nearly as much of an effect on a team's performance throughout the year as people like to believe, (see Bobby Cox and Joe Torre, the latter of which lost as many games as he won prior to joining the Empire), but Jerry Manuel was not very good at all, yet they bring him back. Forgetting the injuries last year, the Mets made horrible moves that go along with their long history of horrible moves, Luis Castillo over Orlando Hudson, Ollie over Lowe, not even an attempt to get Texeira or CC or Burnett. And with the depleted minors and lack of a decent free agent class, we have to hope that the pitching staff is good enough and the braves and Phillies are bad enough to let the mets squeeze into post season.

I think bringing back Warthen was a mistake, but it also depends on who may be available. If the questionable pitchers get off to a bad start next year, he's gone.

I'm not real happy that Warthen's coming back. Fair or not, I blame him for the staff-wide jump in walks and most of Mike Pelfrey's regression.
