The Sunday Column

I'm thinking about switching sides to "Keep Willie." I don't see the point of Jerry Manuel. The Mets are like a bunch of slacker teenagers. Not one of them is giving any sort of quote or effort to save Willie's job (compare that to the Yankees the last three seasons with Torre). If they switch to someone who is on Willie's staff, someone who has been around - what makes anyone think the slacker teens will react any different. They need a new face in the clubhouse.

Stop torturing Willie. Either hand the keys to Jerry or announce Willie's staying all year. Enough. It's boring and can't be good for the clubhouse.

It's interesting that they can play a traditional doubleheader when it's inconvenient for THEM to play on Sunday night. I had tickets for Saturday night, now I don't get to see Texas. I don't really care about that - but usually that's the reason they use for the day/night doubleheaders. Also, I thought that there are so many tickets sold that they can't possibly get people into games without playing day/night.

So I find it really really interesting that since THEY don't want to be out late on a Sunday night (unlike those of us who had Dodger tickets) - it's impossible to play a Sunday night game. Let's all remember this the next time they give us the b.s. why they can't play a normal doubleheader. Remember this was a Saturday giveaway day, so there must have been at least a "Howie Rose 40,000" expected. As for me, I'll be very happy to listen to the two games by the pool at Mets Police Headquarters.

Why the hell didn't anyone build a dome. I was there last night. The Mets didn't make it rain, and everyone had the forecast really wrong. However it was really annoying to make a very long drive and bring The Kid (no not Gary Carter) to Shea and then have no game. Why didn't the Mets (or Yankees or Football Giants) decide to build a dome. Flushing sucks in April and September and May and I kind of remember games in October once....why the hell wouldn't you use this "retractable dome" technology we hear about. Instead we get 40 more years of crappy Aprils.

Crazy idea #1: Trade Jose Reyes. They need a shakeup. I haven't thought this one out, I don't know who you'd get, and I don't know who'd play SS - but maybe what this team needs is to think differently.

Crazy idea #2: Hire Tommy Lasorda as manager. Yeah that's stupid - but if they are going to suck, let's have a crazy old man in the dugout. Maybe Jerry Manuel could secretly be managing but let Tommy do his schtick. Yes he's a Dodger but I guess you haven't noticed what the new ballpark looks like.

I loved Buster Olney's column that gets into how crazy it is to blame Willie for bringing in Wagner for a save mid-inning. Isn't that what closers do? Long URL:

Shouldn't we start talking about Chipper hitting .400 plus? He's been hitting like .420. For someone that far over .400 you sure don't hear much about it.

Mussina is going to start the All-Star Game! 10 wins, and it's his home studio. Amazing. Who saw that coming?

This is interesting about baseball replay (from mlb.com): the crew chief's decision to use or not use instant replay on a particular call would be final, and not subject to second-guessing by team or league personnel. Team personnel would not have any right to demand instant replay. The crew chief's decision on a call after using instant replay would also be final.

Good stuff here about drugs being the reason the Mets got Keith: http://www.amny.com/sports/baseball/mets/ny-spkeith0615,0,948803.story?track=rss
