Who is #41?

SS

Man we're getting old. The cool chick in the office (she likes baseball and Galactica, although she's a Bosox fan) comes into my office and admires the photo I have up. It's two baseball players standing on a pitchers mound with their backs to us. The younger one wears #31 and she immediately recognized him.

She asks me, "Who's 41?"

I couldn't believe it. Who's 41???? Tom Seaver!

She wasn't impressed. The name meant nothing to her.

"He was even on the Sox. He was sitting in your dugout when you lost in 1986!"

She just said, "I was five" and left.

It is tough when you realize how old you are.
I was mocking that douche Doyle who comments on Althouse and claims to be this huge Mets fan. I told him he was the Choo-Choo Coleman of the Althouse blog and he told me he would take it as a compliment.

Seriously, one of the things I always held against the Mets and the Jets and the Nets is that they don't really invovle their old stars and heros in the ongoing life of the club. I mean Hernandez and Darling are a good start but they need to keep the faces of the team those of the old players. They really, really missed a chance by not making Wally Backman manager. He could be your Billy Martin for crying out loud. He would bring the back page and lots of juice for the Mets. I don't understand why they went with Jerry Manuel. Or Willie for that matter. They really should stick with their own guys.

I think part of it has been the nature of the players. Gooden and Strawberry, Dykstra and Backman all had problems. Seaver chooses to stay away. I can't kill the Mets on this one.

I supported the idea of Wally as well, but Jerry has my support.

But you just don't want the Boy Scouts. They don't even want that as they are blowing off Gary Carter. Strawberry could be the grand old man of the Mets. The first base coach that has seen it all and then some. He would be a great mentor because I think he has really turned his life around. The Mets started this with Seaver. There was no reason why he had to be a Yankee announcer instead of a Met's guy. And I mean they should have put Dykstra right in the broadcast booth. He could be your Phil Rizzuto or Jerry Coleman. You guys shouldn't dump on your heritage.

That's why I hope that Freddy Coupon hires some jets to fly over the new staduim. You know for traditions sake.
