I know the trendy thing to do today is to talk about how "smart" the Mets were by not getting Manny.
Last weekend the trendy thing was to talk about a lack of "edge."
They weren't smart, they were cheap. You want edge, try a dreadlocked outfielder with a couple of rings.
Let me take you to a parallel world where the Mets left fielder has been suspended for 50 games.
It's a media free for all in New York today (and yesterday) as the Yankees and A-Rod thankfully get some cover. However, the Mets have won four straight and swept the Philles. At worst they are a half game ot, maybe even in first if Manny knocked in a run or two in some of these Santana-day losses. Irate callers spend the day playing "told you so" on WFAN.
So what? We do that anyway.
Now that Manny's gone, let's take a look at the roster.
Daniel Murphy takes over as the left fielder, ending the platoon in right with Church. Fernando Tatis will now work into an outfield rotation.
The only roster difference? Gary Sheffield is not a Met.
Oh, and on July 3rd Manny will be once again be in the lineup with the NL MVP Carlos Beltran.
Basically the Manny-less Mets team is the one you have tonight.
The money? Manny doesn't get paid when he's suspended. Plus I appreciate how suddenly you are worried about the Wilpon family finances.
They should have signed him. Don't give up your guns. They were cheap.
As for steroid allegations? As I keep suggesting, you all know deep down who is going to be on a list someday, and he's one of the biggest Met heroes, and they are going to retire his #, so let's not get all hypocritical.
...
Now that David Wright is hitting .314 can you morons stop booing him? Please.
