On Monday I write a weekly column for Flushing University. This is this week's column.
Wow, the Mets really don't get it, do they?
I'm writing this on Sunday afternoon. I'm enjoying a nice sunny Sunday without the Mets. I think they play at 6pm on pseduo Sunday Night Baseball, I don't know, I don't care.
They were 8.5 out when I went to the beach Saturday morning. I heard they won. I don't know what the Phillies did. I don't know, I don't care.
I'm not being a front runner, I'm just giving the Mets as much thought as they give to us.
David Howard, the Mets VP who always gives good quote, was asked about Old Timer's Day. He said that having Old Timer's Day was a bad investment. He says this because attendance was bad in 1994.
There you have it. The Mets, as embodied by David Howard, don't care about you, only dollars.
So I look at my own investments.
I invest a lot of time writing about the Mets. Nobody makes me, I just enjoy doing it. Oh sure, I make about $20 a month now because my blog (The Mets Police) has grown, but it's clearly not about the money. Unfortunately for me, my dad taught me to care about some laundry from Flushing. Now, my love is just a bad investment.
So maybe I will still give the Mets my time, but not as much. Saturday and Sunday were sunny out, so I blew the Mets off. Maybe they are 6.5 out as you read this. I don't know, I don't care.
I have other investments such as money. I have two 15 game packages this season. That's $1200. I think I got a lousy return on my investment. I'm stuck with lots of tickets for a 4th place team, and even some of my "Saturday" games take place on weeknights. That's a lousy investment, so much like Old Timer's Day, I will take David Howard's advice and discontinue the investment.
I can still watch the games on TV, and if the price of cable gets too much or they create Pay Per View only, I'll go on with my life and not invest in that either.
So David, enjoy playing out the string. Tell Jeff and Fred to enjoy Dodger Stadium East, and I won't care. Investing in this team provides a bad return.
It works both ways David. If you don't care, neither will I. I'm just not that invested in you any more.
