Bound by proud tradition but tempted by western gold (New York Giants) - 05.20.57 - SI Vault

Uh oh, sounds like Stoneham is serious about moving the Giants out west.  From May 1957.

Perhaps Stoneham has definitely refused Minneapolis and positively turned down San Francisco. Perhaps he intends to keep his Giants forever in Manhattan, squeezed between Coogan's Bluff and the Harlem River. Perhaps the whole thing is nothing, all this talk of moving.

But don't bet on it.

Horace Stoneham doesn't talk as much as Walter O'Malley, and he has no compulsion for forcing events, like O'Malley. But when the situation demands drastic action, Stoneham throws the dice with the best of them. Consider the dramatic hiring of Leo Durocher, the startling trade that brought Alvin Dark and Eddie Stanky to the Giants, the calculated dealing off of the hero, Bobby Thomson.

Currently, Stoneham is fondling the dice again. He is aware of the situation. It is drastic.

Attendance at the Polo Grounds in 1954, the year the Giants won the pennant and the World Championship, was 1,155,067, a very pleasant but hardly spectacular figure.

...

Stoneham clearly recognizes these facts:

-The Brooklyn Dodgers are going to move out of Ebbets Field.

-The New York Giants ought to move out of their beloved Polo Grounds.

-The New York Yankees do not particularly want either the Dodgers or the Giants as tenants in Yankee Stadium, and neither the Dodgers nor the Giants particularly want to become tenants of the Yankees.

-The City of New York its ruling politicians acutely aware of criticism because of delays in road building and school construction is not going to build a stadium of any type for either the Dodgers or the Giants.

Let us not forget New York Giants PSL's are evil

As the Giants prepare for their final game at Giants Stadium, let's take a second to recall just how evil PSL's are.

Gary Myers in the News talks about how some fans have had the seats for years and years and have to give them up.  I don't know about you but handing a team say 20 grand for the "right" to give them money every year is not something I would ever consider.   They wiped out their entire waiting list, but they'll be sold out, and 80,000 fools will have given the Giants money for nothing, for a completely unnecessary stadium with no dome.

It's interesting how the last game at a football stadium is not a big deal as compared to the baseball stadiums.  There's barely any buzz at all.

Former New York Giants Player Larry Jansen Has Died

Our friend "James Bond" has returned from one of his mysterious trips and brings us sad news.

Former major league baseball star Larry Jansen, the winning pitcher in one of the sport's most famous games, died in his sleep early Saturday morning in the home he built in 1951 in his hometown of Verboort.
Jansen was 89.
He is survived by his wife, Eileen, their 10 children, 23 grandchildren, more than 40 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson.
A two-time National League All-Star, Jansen pitched eight seasons for the New York Giants (1947 to 1954) and one season with Cincinnati in 1956. He compiled a 122-89 record with a 3.58 ERA.

Oregon Live wrote a nice lengthy article about Larry, please check it out since if we don't remember the NYG's nobody will.

That cap he's wearing sure looks familiar.  As dad said, "remember where you came from."

Mr. Jansen won two pennants with the Giants...which is at two more than just about everyone on the 2009 Mets....and exactly how many the Mets have won in the last 35 seasons.

Last Game At Polo Grounds For New York Giants - 10.07.57 - SI Vault

From the October 7th 1957 issue of Sports Illustrated:

A fan walked through the bleachers. "Wanna buy a crying towel?" he said. "Buy a set of crying towels."

There were no other vendors. You couldn't buy a scorecard in the bleachers. You couldn't buy a hot dog or coffee. The vendors hadn't showed up. The concession stand was open, though. You could get a beer. There are two big signs in the Polo Grounds that read: "Have a Knick." The concession man was selling Ballantine's.

At 1:32 the public-address announcer said, "Will the guests of the Giants assemble at home plate?" A fan near the third-base boxes snarled, "We're the guests, you jerks."

Giant oldtimers formed on the field, and I walked through the park, on this, the last day the Giants were to play baseball in the Polo Grounds. The flags atop the stadium lay dead against their poles. There was no bunting.

Curse Of Coogan's Bluff On The New York Mets? (Times)

II've only been complaining about the Mets ignoring the Giants for two years.  Now that the Times has. maybe they can recognize the old New York Giants, winners of 10 pennants.

A Curse of Coogan's Bluff?  I almost hope it's true and lasts until I move the team to New Shea in 2060 with the money I make from inventing the holodeck.  New Shea will look exactly like Old Shea on the outside, squares and all, and fans will enter through the Lee Mazzilli rotunda.

In the meantime, read the Times article where finally someone listens to me.

Published: October 4, 2009
Citi Field, the Mets’ new stadium, has many reminders of the Brooklyn Dodgers but few that celebrate the New York Giants.

“We’re the ghosts of the Polo Grounds,” the first voice said. “Remember the Curse of the Bambino on the Red Sox after they dealt Babe Ruth to the Yankees. Well, when the Mets opened Citi Field last April with hardly any mention of the Polo Grounds or the New York Giants, we put the Curse of Coogan’s Bluff on the Mets.”

New York Mets Should Honor Eddie Grant (Mushnick)

I held back on this for a few days since today is a busy "real life" day for me.

On Sunday, Mushnick wrote about former New York (baseball) Giant Eddie Grant who we have written about before.

Mushnick:

A Grant plaque could make special any wall in patrons' view within Citi Field. And with the Brooklyn Dodgers holding a visible presence within Citi Field, sustaining Grant's memory as both a New York Giant and the only major leaguer to be killed in action in WW I would be a noble deed. If not the Mets, who?
The Mets have been contacted about Grant and, preliminarily, seem interested. Good. Soldier, scholar and athlete, Eddie Grant, especially among those who never heard of him, should not be forgotten.

2010 New York Giants Football Club Seats Not Sold Out

Wow.
Just got this...

Dear Giants Wait-List Member,

Three weeks ago we announced the creation of Mezzanine Club C in the New Giants Stadium, set to open for the 2010 football season. This opportunity for our wait-list members reduced the per-game price for these Giants Select Club Seats from $400 per game to $250 per game. To date, more than 40% of all Mezzanine Club C PSLs have been sold, and a significant percentage of the remaining Coach’s Club, Mezzanine A and B have sold in the past three weeks.

We are pleased that many wait-list members have shared their excitement and anticipation with us on becoming seat holders in the new stadium, so we decided to share a few recent notes with you below.

We invite you, your family, friends, and business associates to call us at 1-877-NYG-2010 (1-877-694-2010) to order your Giants Select Club Seats while they last. Remember, all PSLs for general admission sections in the new stadium are sold-out! For a map of the new stadium withclub seat views and prices and general PSL information, please visit www.nyg2010.com.

Thank you for your support. We hope you elect to join us as seat owners in the new stadium. Please act now while some of the best seats in the house are available; this week, for the first-time, this offer is open to the general public.

Giants Stadium, LLC

"I have been a faithful Giants fan since I was a little boy. When I put my name on the Wait List - over 20 years ago, I never thought this day would come. When I got the call that I could become a season ticket holder in the new stadium, I could not believe it. Starting in 2010, I will sit in my own seats. Can't believe this day has come! Go Big Blue!"

J. Reynolds
New Jersey

"My father and I have been going to games at Giants Stadium for years. He never put his name on the Wait List as he thought he would never have the opportunity to own tickets. I put my name on the Wait List when I graduated from college. After many years, I finally have the opportunity to become a season ticket holder for my Giants. I will be in the new stadium in 2010 for opening day with my father. Sitting in "MY" seats. This is a great Day."

J. Ward
New York

“I wanted to express my gratitude for providing me with the opportunity to come off of the waitlist and become a Giants Season Ticket Holder. I have been waiting on the list for years with the hopes of one day receiving the chance to purchase seats. I look forward to entering the new stadium and being able to sit in my own seats with my family. This is something I know will be greatly appreciated by generations of Robinsons to come. This is a dream come true!”

Photo Gallery Of The New York Giants Throwback Uniforms (Part 2)

Continuing from yesterday, I think in 10 years we'll be glad to have these random photos of the Giants throwback jerseys.

Some empty seats down low.

That's it for now.  I'm saving the rest for a rainy day in the off-season!

Tomorrow we're back to touring the team store.

Keep The Throwbacks, Win The Wild Card!

Mets Police followers know I love the NY Giants and thought the throwbacks looked great.

The Mets are playing .667 ball in Giants throwbacks.

.667 would get them 30 more wins - an 85 win season.

Colorado, the wild card leader, is only on pace to win 88 games.

It's as if it is meant to be.  We can find three games somewhere.

Oh and Wright is on the DL.  Someone place Santana in bubble wrap before an asteroid lands on him.

They are not scheduled to wear throwbacks tomorrow.

I have a gallery of the throwbacks already scheduled for next weekend.

Giants Throwbacks Available At Citi Field: $150

Media Goon says the throwbacks are on sale at Citi Field for $150.

I like them, but not at that price.  He didn't mention what numbers if any are available but he'll be checking in I'm sure.

Last night my on-sale Majestic replica came.  $75.  I love it.  I think MLB has a sale for another few days.

Be Nice To The New York Mets Day

I have decided today will be "Be Nice To The Mets Day."

They are being cool and honoring the NY Giants (the team that won 10 pennants but nobody talks about, yet all you ever heard about was waaaahhh Brooklyn and that was way before Fred build N'Ebbetts Field.)  Plus they are adding championship banners to the fence and "Mets stuff" around Citi Field.

So I won't pick on them today.  In fact, if by 5pm they ban black hats and name Lee Mazzilli manager I will have accomplished all my goals and I can shut down the blog.

Although I will be nice today it doesn't mean everyone has to:

Bitter Bill has a great look back and some of the less-pretty Mets uniforms of the past.

Osh41 asked if Charlie Samuels knows about these.  Hopefully Charlie won't read the blog before Tuesday.

Pedro:  I'm known not to be a fan.  I watched the game.  He looked pretty good for three, maybe 4....the 5th inning was shaky....the Phillies OFers caught some possible doubles...but he was serviceable, although I don't think a 5 inning pitcher would have helped the Mets in the second half.

New York Mets To Honor Giants AND Add "Mets Stuff" To Citi Field

To paraphrase Gary Thorne (thanks Osh41 for the correction)...I am in "stunned disbelief."
Amazin'
I'm speechless!
Let us rejoice!
From mets.com (and thanks to Adam Rubin and Mets Blog for the tips).
I once again would like to thank Metsblog for linking to Mets Police because their huge readership brings attention to all my whining.

FLUSHING, N.Y., August 12, 2009 - The New York Mets today announced they will honor their National League heritage by wearing throwback uniforms inspired by the turn of the century New York Giants uniforms when they play the San Francisco Giants August 14-16 at Citi Field.

The cream-colored jerseys feature an oversized blue "NY" on the front, blue and orange piping on the sleeves and a Mr. Met patch on the right sleeve.

Mets Amazin' Memorabilia will auction off the jerseys to benefit the Mets Foundation on www.mets.com/gameused.

In addition, the Mets have begun installation of photographic imagery of famous players and historic moments in team history on the Field and Promenade Levels as well as the display of team championship banners on the left field wall.

The Mets were created after the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants left for California following the 1957 season. Major League Baseball granted New York a National League franchise in 1960, and the Mets played their first two seasons in 1962 and 1963 at the Polo Grounds - the former home of the Giants.

Could THIS Be How The Mets Honor The NY Giants?

Stop complaining you old time Giants fans....

Sure the Dodgers got an Ebbetts Field replica built and a rotunda...

But check out the cool Black and Orange garbage cans at Citi Field.   I believe these are to honor the NY Giants.

(They might technically be a very dark blue.)

Should The Eddie Grant Plaque Be At Citi Field?

I'm not sure as to the current location of the Eddie Grant plaque - but maybe Citi Field would be a good location for it.   (The history of the plaque is very mysterious - read about it here, and if someone can tell me where it is now, please do.)

If you don't know who Eddie Grant was - that's the point entirely.  That's why I'd like to see something like this in Flushing.

(This was a good suggestion by Mr. Fantangent.  If you have something you'd like to see the Mets Police address shoot me a note at shannon@metspolice.com)

Mets Police Apologize To This Man And His Cool Cap

Last week when I recapped my latest trip to Citi Field I mentioned this guy's cap and shirt.

I love the shirt.  It's a "Hawaiian" shirt with all Mets stuff and would make a nice present if you ever want to buy me something.

Then I cracked wise about the cap, saying that we should keep it away from the Wilpons because it looked "Dodgery" with a white NY on a blue cap.  I feared that the Wilpons would further Dodgerize the club.

Boy was I wrong!  It isn't Dodgery at all...in fact it is a ...

New York Giants 1936-39 Cooperstown Fitted CapNew York Giants 1936-39 Cooperstown Fitted Cap
by American Needle Own a little piece of history with American Needle's New York Giants 1936-39 Cooperstown Cap, a precise replica of what the legendary pros once wore.

This dude is super-cool and I apologize for goofing on his hat.  He has a kicking shirt and a groovy Giants cap on!

What's also interesting is not one reader nailed me on it.  You know why?  because nobody knows anything about the NY Giants because this whole darn town is Dodgers obsessed.  Of course you don't know what the Giants wore in '36, how would you?  By looking at the Mel Ott rotunda?

I bought the Ott jersey for my self.   It's too nice looking.  If you see a dude in Citi Field with an Ott jersey, heck if you see anyone on Earth in the 21st century with an Ott jersey I'm sure it is me - come say hi.

One of my goals for the weekend is to start accumulating all mentions of the New York Giants to this site.   There's very little out there about them, I have no claim on them (before my time), and I don't really know anything about them - but stuff should live on the internet somewhere so why not here.

If you're in a Giants mood now, here's an old link.

Mr. Cool shirt and classic Giants cap, I am sorry.   I hope you are there the next time I actually use my weekday tickets instead of stub-hubbing them, and I will come shake your hand.

(By the way, if you're about to send me some link from mlb.com that this is indeed a modern New Era Mets variant don't crush my dreams.  Let  me live the lie.  His blue is a little lighter isn't it.)

Anyone Know Where I Can Buy New York Giants Stuff?

Random question for y'all....I'm on a Giants kick (the more I think about it, and having just finished The Echoing Green, the NY on the Mets hat, the Polo Grounds....I think the Giants are the true ancestors to our Mets)....and I'd like to get a NY Giants jersey or something (t-shirt?) to wear in the rotunda.

I have found this cool Ott jersey and also a Mays...but I don't have $250 for this...and I already have a hat (black, an official color of the Giants) and 1951 jacket.

Any suggestions?

The Passing of New York Giants Dusty Rhodes (Centerfield Maz)

Speaking of Centerfield Maz (see the post below) - he is cool enough to let us borrow entire articles form his site.   We share not only our love of the Mets but of remembering the New York Giants.  Unfortunately, this is a sad article:

THURSDAY, JUNE 18, 2009

The Passing of New York Giants Dusty Rhodes

Today centerfield maz received the news of the passing of NY Giants Dusty Rhodes' from Bill at the NY Baseball Giants Nostalgia Society, and a comment from Dusty's nephew Garrett. I will update the 5/13/09 post.

James Lamar Rhodes was Born May 13, 1927 in the cotton fieldsof Matthews, Alabama. He would make it to the big city, and become a hero playing a seven year career in the 1950s. The carefree young man missed many a curfew, because he loved drinking, night life & the ladies.

After six years in the minors,he came up to the NY Giants as a backup outfielder in 1952. Playing in only 67 games, he hit 10 HRs with 36 RBIs. He didn’t care if the pitcher was right or left hander, he just wanted to hit. He became a Leo Durocher favorite, ready anytime he was called upon. Rhodes once said “I could get out of a coffin & get base hit”.

In 1953,in 76 games he hit 11 HRs with 30 RBIs but only batted .233. In the 1954 World Championship season, Rhodes became a NY Giants legend, batting .341 in 82 games, 15 HRs, 50 RBIs, 7 doubles and 31 runs scored. He was often used as a pinch-hitter for Hall of Famer Monte Irvin, and came through with an incredible number of clutch hits, batting .333 as a pinch hitter. Irvin said Rhodes was the best natural hitter he ever saw.

Post Season: In the 1954 World Series, his legend grew to Biblical proportions as he almost single-handed led the Giants' to a sweep of the Indians. Game #1 is known for Willie Mays making “The Catch”, but Rhodes was also a hero in that game. In the 10th inning Mays & Hank Thompson walked. Rhodes came to bat as a pinch hitter against Cleveland pitcher Bob Lemon, and blasted a game winning home run in the right field stands.
The next day he had an encore performance, in the 5th inning he came to bat as a pinch hitter again for Irvin. With Mays on 2nd & Thompson on 1st again, Rhodes singled off Hall of Famer Early Wynn tying the game. Thompson would score on pitcher Johnny Antonelli’s ground out to put New York ahead. Then Rhodes then led off the 7th inning with a home run to the short porch in right field to seal the 3-1 win.

In Game #3 Rhodes once again pinch hit for Monte Irvin, this time as early as the 3rd inning. With the bases loaded Rhodes singled off Mike Garcia scoring two runs as the Giants went on to beat Cleveland 6-2 taking a commanding 3-0 Series lead. After Game #3, Sportswriter Red Smith joked : "There's talk of calling off the 4th game so that “Dusty” Rhodes can give an exhibition of walking on water." Overall in the World Series, Rhodes hit .667 (4-for-6) 2 HRs, 7 RBIs, 2 runs scored & a walk. He was the toast of the town and instant celebrity.

In 1955 Rhodes enjoyed his last good season, hitting over .300 in 96 games. In 1956 he played in a career high 111 games but only hit .217 with 8 HRs & 33 RBIs. In 1957, he dropped to .205, and was the final batter in the history of the New York Giants, at the Polo Grounds on Sept. 29, 1957.

Rhodes missed the first season in San Francisco and in 1959 hit only .188 in 48 at bats before calling it quits. He said after Leo Durocher left the Giants, baseball wasn’t much fun anymore. Life time Rhodes played in 576 games, hit .253, 54 HRs, 207 RBIs, 54 doubles,& 146 runs scored.
Retirement: He worked as a Pinkerton Security guard at the 1964 World’s Fair, then as a captain on a friends tug boat for 25 years out of Staten Island.
At the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Rhodes, of Greek heritage, coached the Grecian baseball team. In 2007 Rhodes coached the University of North Florida’s baseball team.
Rhodes passed away on June 17th, 2009 in Las Vegas after battling diabetes and emphysema, he was 82. Willie Mays & Monte Irvin both made statements from their homes saying Rhodes was a dear friend & will be very missed.

Please add Centerfield Maz to the list of blogs you check out if you dug this one.

3-D Tour Of The Polo Grounds

This is way cool.   For those of you under 30, or those who own major league baseball teams - the Polo Grounds was the first home of the New York Mets, and also is rumored to have been home of a team called the New York Giants who according to legend played in New York around the same time as the Brooklyn Dodgers.

New York Giants "Miracle Ball" Signing/Screening Tonight In Huntington

Here's a good review of Brian Biegel's book Miracle Ball here.     (The AP likes to slap bloggers who excerpt, so just click the link).  The book tells the story of what happened to Bobby Thomson's home run ball. (There used to be a team called the New York Giants believe it or not.  Don't tell Fred Wilpon).

For more about Miracle Ball read Brian's guest column here.

If you'd like to hear more about these "New York Giants" that never get mentioned read here.

Tonight in Huntington there's a book signing - at the Book revue.  They will also be showing 5-6 clips of the Miracle Ball documentary.
