Marchman in The Sun

Some good rips in here from Tim Marchman, who is always entertaining, but he writes for The Sun which actually now has fewer readers than the Mets Police.

There was a brief time in which it seemed as if the Mets, with several of the best young players in baseball, a new television network, Citi Field on the rise, and shrewd, even-keeled management, could not possibly botch things up. There was also a brief time in which it seemed that Gregg Jefferies would join Darryl Strawberry and Dwight Gooden in leading the Mets on a thousand-year reign of terror. In one case as the other, the natural order asserted itself, and the franchise continued its long history of agonizing farce.

The worst thing about all this, of course, is that the team isn't even entertainingly dreadful, as the Jeff Torborg/Dallas Green Mets were, but rather relentlessly dreary, along the lines of Art Howe's clubs. If the Mets are doomed to follow a cyclical pattern of tantalizing success followed by miserable under-performance, as they have as long as I've been alive, the least they can do in the down years is be truly wretched. Luis Castillo and musings on SNY's camerawork are a long, long way from Anthony Young and threats to show reporters the Bronx. This team isn't even any good at being bad.
Great read here for those of you that don't subscribe to the New York Sun.

Willie Watch

Off to Los Angeles and the dreaded 10pm starts. Remember back before the internet when two weeks would go by and you'd have no idea what the team was doing because the Daily News only had "Mets at Los Angeles, night."

Meanwhile, the New York Sun continues it's quest to get Willie fired. Can't say I disagree...for a team that's a half-game ot of first I really have little confidence. I guess September 2007 will do that to a person.

Here's our new favorite writer Tim Marchman in today's Sun (which again has as many readers, three, as this blog.)

The question that needs to be asked about Willie Randolph, then, is whether he's likely to manage well or not. There are some good reasons why he should keep his job, not least that the Mets have won more than they've lost and are just a half game out of first place. The point those of us who think he should be fired are making, though, isn't that he's so awful that he should be turned into a burnt offering to appease the angry baseball gods, but that under his leadership the Mets are likely to keep muddling along, not doing too badly but not doing especially well, either. The team is capable of something more.

Willie Watch

I think more people (3) read The Mets Police than the New York Sun...but the Sun is calling for Willie's head!

It's time for the Mets to fire Willie Randolph. They should fire him if his team sweeps the Arizona Diamondbacks this weekend. They should fire him if his team wins all three games by a total score of 27-0. They should fire him if his team puts on such a display this weekend that the greater Phoenix area literally burns to the ground around them, lit by nothing but the intensity of their passion and brilliance. The man's time is up, and nothing can change that.

Calm The Eff Down

As you get to know The Mets Police you'll find that nobody likes giving them a hard time more than we do.

That being said: CALM DOWN

On Sunday morning there was going to be a tickertape parade.

They ran into two good pitchers and the bats cooled.

The NY Sun is writing this:

What Does $135 Million Purchase for the Mets?

As the
Mets were playing the Chicago Cubs yesterday afternoon, several Flushing partisans sent me e-mails asking, basically, the same question: This is what $135 million buys? One regular correspondent, notable for his generally even keel, simply slugged his subject line "Minaya" and pasted the starting lineup into the body of his e-mail. At times, simple observation counts as an expression of disbelief.

Relax! Santana tonight against the Nats. The Mets are 1.5 games behind the Marlins. Although Willie might want to have infield practice this afternoon.
