New York Mets Old Timer's Day Is Too Much Work?

Mets Blog just tweeted about this:  Note: Old Timer’s Day is Too Much Work

Evan Roberts says someone at MetsCo says that old timers day is too hard.  Matt Cerrone at Mets Blog basically writes what I would have written...

...so go check out Matt's rant over on the big blog and I'll start by helping the Mets out.

Meeting:
Hey Howie, we're going to have OT Day so we're gonna need you to work on TV for an hour, OK?  Cool.

Ron, Keith, Bobby Ojeda - come downstairs at 12:30 ok.  Someone call Franco and Mazzilli, ok that's 5 guys.  Give Seaver the $50,000 and tell him we'll open a wine shop in Citi Field - that's 6.   Mookie is doing nothing.  Doc has been at every third game.   That's 8 guys.

Someone call the Ducks and check their schedule...get Gary and Buddy in here and we'll promote some Ducks games.  That's 10 guys.

OK, Timmy the intern - need you to call everyone on the 69, 86 and 00 Mets and invite them...let me know how you do.

Let Timmy the Intern make some calls, see what you got and take it from there.   This can't be hard.  Somehow the Yankees can pull it off.

Oh Mets Blog also mentions they sold one of the three 1986 trophies for $32,000.

To all this:  Really?

UPDATE:  The Yankees announced their list which includes Lee Mazzilli and David Cone.   So between those two guys, Keith, Ron, Bobby O and Hojo you are well one your way with very very little effort.

the thought of the Mets saying that Old Timer's Day is "too much work" just sickens me. It actually sickens me more than anything else they've done, and that says something.

Think about this - You have the '69 Mets coming back together at Shea later this season. No need for phone calls. Hand out the invites in person. The '86 Mets that are in house are well connected to their teammates - make them do some work (they could sell it better than some Mets intern could). Do this on a day when the Braves are in town and you can get Mr. Hotfoot himself (McDowell) back.

But don't forget some of the lovable characters from the losing teams (anyone who was invited to Shea Goodbye last year is in). Davey Johnson manages one side and Bobby Valentine the other.

Or do the Wilpons think they'll have to answer questions about the lack of Mets history at what I call Chez Amazin' in the days and weeks leading up to this event, and that idea just scares the hell out of them?

- The Mets Hall of Fame (no inductions since 2002)
- Mets history
- Trying to get help for the current inept ML roster
- Finding a competent COO to replace the silver-spooned dolt that is Jeff Wilpon
- Firing a manager in a nornal way
- Firing a manager when necessary

By contrast - in the ‘worth all of the effort’ column:
- Brooklyn Dodgers history
- Modeling the Mets home for the next 75 years after the Dodgers home
- Erasing the memory of William A. Shea
