Raissman Knows ESPN Hates Children

Hooray for Bib Raissman who has this to say today about ESPN:

Look, ESPN suits, if they were on the level, would admit that airing a game capable of producing a significant rating is all that matters to them. For them, a high rating is significantly more important than presenting an "historic" moment their announcers will ultimately screw up. A moment which has little significance in Dallas or Green Bay.

You think ESPN would say "no" if someone at NBC wanted to trade this "historic" Yankees-Orioles tilt for tonight's Cowboys-Packers matchup?

Funny, right? Even funnier is ESPN saying first pitch will be at 8:25 p.m., as if that's a great time to start a Sunday night game. Don't be surprised if the game starts closer to 9 p.m. Why do you think ESPN is already spinning it so they can blame the Yankees for a late start?

When The Rainout Happens Why Do I Get The 8:05 Game?

So, I bought tickets to a game scheduled for 1:05 on Sunday.

ESPN, which hates children, moves the game to 8:05. Sucks to be me.

If today's game is rained out, that game will be moved to Sunday 1:05.

So the people that wanted to go Saturday have to go Sunday. The people who wanted to go Sunday afternoon have to go Sunday night. Since the Saturday folks are screwed anyway, why not let the Sunday 1:05 folks go Sunday at 1:05?

If you are interested in um, "re-selling" your tickets at the official home of MLB scalping, they are going for $5. There is absolutely no demand on Mets tickets.

ESPN Hates Children

Hey you know how your kid was looking forward to the Mr. Mets dash on September 7th? Well ESPN moved the game to 8:05. Sunday night.

Hey you know how your son wanted to see the last game at Yankee Stadium? ESPN moved it to 8:05.

Last Game At Yankee Stadium: ESPN Robs My Son of Memory

Well it's official - the September 21st game at Yankee Stadium (the final game) will be a night game. I was going to take the boy. At his age there's no way he can stay awake until 11pm in a packed staidum (on a school night too).

I was hoping to gift him this memory (he's quite young) so that even if he didn't appreciate it now, he might appreciate it when he's a man.

Once again ESPN strikes - it's an 8:05 start and even daddy will be looking at his watch and hoping for a fast game.

Willie Watch - Conflicting Reports From SI and ESPN

Yeah they won tonight, but at this point one win isn't going to stop the Willie Watch.

Conflicting reports Thursday and Friday have Willie staying through the season or gone by Monday, depending on which source you read.

On ESPN.com Thursday, Jayson Stark, who must be a fan of The Mets Police, wrote:

"The Willie Watch seems as if it's back on in Flushing Meadow, now that the glow of the Mets' brief seven-out-of-nine tear has been obliterated by the five-game losing streak they finally ended Wednesday. But don't be so sure that Randolph's axing is going to arrive before the next No. 7 train.
GM Omar Minaya repeated again Tuesday night that Randolph is safe. And he's not just blowing PR fog. According to one baseball man who speaks regularly with Mets management, Randolph is "not going to get fired. Period."

Not that there isn't nonstop debate about the manager's status, a debate that reverberates around all levels of Shea Stadium. Not that there isn't constant second-guessing of Randolph's bullpen usage or his often-dispassionate style of player relations.
But the fellow who has to make this call, Minaya, isn't giving in to that talk. Minaya "has made his decision," said the same baseball man. "And the decision is, this is Willie's team. And he's not going away."
Then again, though, neither is The Willie Watch -- not if his $138-million baseball team doesn't click into gear in a hurry, at least. "

On the other hand, over on SI.com, Jon Heyman wrote on Friday:

"A Mets official indicated that nothing was expected to be decided today regarding Randolph's status. But that doesn't preclude something from happening later this weekend. Sources indicate his hold on the job is shaky, at best.
Should Randolph be fired, bench coach Jerry Manuel will take over, sources told SI.com"

Meanwhile, FoxSports.com reported on their site on Thursday that Willie's job was "day-to-day"

So who to believe? Omar may be loyal, but he has to answer to the Wilpons. The worse this team does, the more his job is on the line as well. I don't like Omar, but he's not an idiot. If the Mets lose the next 2 games over the weekend, Willie will be gone.

Sunday Night Baseball

I don't want to listen to the Mets complain the THEY have to work late on Sunday and then work again Monday night. Plenty of patrons of theirs have out of town business trips and show up for work the next day. So no whining and definitely don't use it as an excuse when dropping 4 of 6 out west.

What everyone should complain about is ESPN Sunday Night Baseball moving games. Yes Mushnick has well covered this ground but I wanted my say, because I have Sunday tickets. When I got Sunday tickets it was with the idea that I would go to games on a Sunday afternoon.

The Mets sold me a ticket for a 1 o'clock game, I'd like a 1 o'clock game. I'd like to take the kid. I'd like to get home before 1:30 in the morning on a Sunday night.

Even if ESPN must have night games and the right to night games...why does it start at 8pm? Prime time ratings begin at 7 on Sundays. More than half the population of the United States lives in the Eastern Time Zone. (Read that last sentence twice and remember it come playoffs and football season). I'm sure it makes no difference to Dodgers fans if the game starts at 4pm or 5pm (or 10am). What's with the 8pm starts?

Willie Watch - Peter Gammons: If The Mets Have Someone Else, Willie Is Gone

Peter Gammons was just on ESPN's Mike & Mike In The Morning Show and when asked about Randolph had this to say:

"To be honest, I think that if there were another manager out there that they thought was an immediate fix, Willie would be gone."

Gammons continued that maybe there needs to be a fire lit under the team and that Jerry Manuel, while a good man, is too much like Willie.

Peter, as we have been saying here at the Mets Police for a few weeks now, there is someone that can step in immediately.

Let the Lee countdown clock start.

Willie Watch: ESPN Says Wilpons Ain't Calling Back

ESPN reports:

Randolph tried to reach out to the Mets' owners Wednesday, getting no response before he publicly apologized for the comments he made recently suggesting he was portrayed in a different manner than white managers.

When asked why Mets ownership didn't return Randolph's calls, Jay Horwitz, the team's media relations vice president, told 1050 ESPN Radio's Andrew Marchand on Thursday that "Omar Minaya returned the call on behalf of Mets' ownership."

Randolph and Mets Chief Operating Officer Jeff Wilpon usually speak often, which seems to make the Wilpons' decision not to return Randolph's call telling. Wilpon declined to comment Thursday when contacted by 1050 ESPN Radio.

I smell a press conference on Tuesday.

Empire State Building, espn, subway series

Apparently ESPN's skyline shots on NYC that they use during broadcasts aren't live but rather canned shots that were taken who knows when. Deceive the public in one thing, how do we know what else they are deceiving their viewers with.

An alert employee at the Yankees flagship radio station WCBS-AM noticed the discrepancy during Sunday night's game when he saw different colored lights on the Empire State Building in the ESPN shot than he could see out of his window.

Come on ESPN - is it so difficult to get a live picture of the Empire State Building?

Willie Watch ESPN

Buster Olney on ESPN is apparently unfamiliar with former Orioles manager Lee Mazzili, who is from Brooklyn just like the Dodgers who Fred Wilpon wishes he owned.

I think I'm done with Willie Watches for a few days - there's just too many to keep up with.

They are a team on the edge, a team seemingly without an edge, and in this spring after the Mets conducted arguably the worst collapse in baseball history, Willie Randolph is managing for his job.

There is one pertinent question to all of this: If not Randolph as manager, then who?

Bobby V Movie

Quiet Day. Leave Delgado alone. If you were going to bitch about Delgado you should have bitched when they made yet another free agent signing to replace a home grown player (Mike Jacobs).

Anyways, there's a movie about Bobby Valentine coming out on May 13th and since it's a quiet day, I'll share. Bobby was the king of finishing second when he was in America.

This blog aims to be a little different. We're less likely to complain about a pitching change than we are likely to complain about what the pitcher was wearing.

We're about Mets history and tradition. We'd like to see a Seaver statue at Citi Field. We'd like the black uniforms to go away. We'd like the team to always treat the fans with respect.

We're just regular old Mets fans like you who have migrated from the uppers to the Promenade where we were saddened when we found plexiglass. Finally, for all our complaining we just want the franchise to win the World Series (while nicely dressed).

The site is updated several times a day, usually morning, noon, and night (cliche but true) with other items as they come in.
