As I have mentioned before, I have a 15 games Phillies pack because I'm a capitalist.   I am therefore on their mailing list, and I just got an email with a title something like "discount for ticket holders."  I opened it up to mick it, because that's what I would do if the Mets sent out something similar, but I was surprised at the offer:

Today's caps come from Fitted Hawaii whose fans I think get annoyed when I link to them, but I actually enjoy their custom goodness, including this Phillies cap.






If yo have a friend who can't decide if he likes the Mets, Yankees, Cubs, Diamondbacks - or maybe he just looks good in tan...this might make a good gift.

If you are reading this that means that either

b) the guy Dan who is supposed to be minding the blog while I am away is being a slacker.

This "3930" New Era hat is nice enough....but like many of the 2009 3930's it has that annoying line on the side.



Speaking of lines on the side...this cap is a "women's" cap.  I suppose women like lines.  Just get a regular hat.








Odd color scheme.   You can't where this one during the series if you are a Phils fan.








This barely qualifies as a Yankees anything.   It looks like a made up cap they sell to the tourists.   Maybe if you came from Japan to watch Game 6 but that's it.  Pass.

These kind of guys do.   My problem with these gentlemen?  They helped themselves to handicapped seats for Game 1 of the World Series.






The rest of the section was filled with folks in wheelchairs...but these two had no noticeable reason to be there other than they beat Ticketmaster's flawed system.

I respect Yankees fan Mr. Sunshine who was offered seats in this area for Game 1 and threw them back because he knew that it wasn't right.


Anyways, back to caps.   Today's theme is ugly.










Why?   Maybe you are a fan of the Gorton Fisherman era Islanders and the Yankees?







Apparently there is a cap style I just don't like or understand.









Good luck to you guys.  I hope you never actually have a need to sit in handicapped seats and hope you enjoyed the game.

A throwback edition of alternate caps.  These from the 1910 Yankees.  I never knew they wore red, always assumed it was white in those black and white photos.  I wonder if we'll see a 100th anniversary of this cap day next season?







Here's the 1934 Phils.  If you wore this to a game I would think it was cool, however if I saw you on the street I wouldn't know this has anything to do with the Phillies so you would not get props.







This one from 1912.   Not bad.  I wouldn't heckle you if you wore this.









1946 Phils.  Not bad at all.  Wearable.

This next hat is nice, it's orange and blue and has the traditional....oh wait I thought this was a Mets preview for a second.   Why would any Yankees fan get a cap in these colors?

This cap falls under my "if she's really cute" rule.   On a dude no way, but if the Phillies chick looks hot in this, it is workable.

The Post wrote about the Phillies yesterday.


Read these first two paragraphs, then I will re-write them for you:

The losing culture that surrounded this franchise began changing when Larry Bowa, a popular shortstop on the 1980 championship team, took over as manager in 2001. He led the Phillies to three winning seasons in four years, but the volatile Bowa couldn't get them over the hump and his irascible personality annoyed some players.

The player-friendly Manuel replaced Bowa in 2005 and Philadelphia came close to reaching the playoffs his first two years only to fall short in the final weekend of the regular season

"If you're thinking about yesterday, well that means you're not doing nothing now. Our ultimate goal now is to win again. Before, it was to win a World Series. Now, it's to repeat. We've got the talent and I just want to keep the same way of playing, the same attitude and how we go about our business and we'll be OK."

The Phillies want to win again.  They want to play meaningful games in October not September.   I want to play meaningless games in September, the way the 86ers did.  A 20 game lead would suit me just fine.


Until the Mets can beat the Phillies they need to respect them.  Until the Mets can run off a sustained period of success (none of this one year followed by underperformers) I won't be satisfied.

I like these Phillies fans.  They are obsessed with our second place team and they bring the funny.

First they throw this at us:

Last year, Mets star third baseman David Wright — public face of the MLB '07: The Show video game, Vitamin Water sports drinks and Fathead posters — made several public statements about how he'd be cutting back on "endorsement deals and promotional activities," to focus on the game. Two weeks later, he made his second visit to theLate Show with David Letterman. To this day, athletepromotions.com informs me I can book Wright for "Corporate Appearances, Endorsements, Speaking & Autograph Signings

This fair point...

Mets prospects enjoy an absurd amount of hype. Remember Paul Wilson? Alex Escobar? Rey Ordoñez? Bill Pulpisher? Ed Yarnall? Lastings Milledge? You wouldn't if they played anywhere but New York, which treats every one of its new prospects like the second coming of Howard Johnson. 

That's kind of true.  As is this...

The Mets' last championship team was basically an advertisement for wasted talent. As a sports fan I feel deprived that Darryl Strawberry and Doc Gooden — two sure-fire Hall of Famers whose careers were derailed by excess — never got their day in the sun. Would they have flamed out as quickly playing for the Royals? Maybe, but they didn't have a chance on the Mets.

Don't get mad at me.  I didn't write it and the dude is right.

Then because that column was enough he added this one: More Reasons To Hate The Mets

Last year the Mets, a professional franchise worth well over $800 million dollars, allowed themselves to be Rickrolled. For those who are still unfamiliar with this phenomenon, Rickrolling essentially boils down to this: sometime in 2007 the entire Internet seemed to band together and attempt to ensure that Rick Astley’s 1987 song “Never Gonna Give You Up” gets played as many times as humanly possible. Well, last year the Mets were conducting an online poll as to what song the fans wanted to hear this year during the 8th inning. Naturally they weren’t savvy enough to counter the prank, and ended up having to change the rules to avoid playing the song at each and every homegame. Which brings me to our next topic ..

They can’t even win at picking songs without cheating.

And finally...

You know that guy sitting in the cheap seats who wastes an entire inning trying to get everyone in his section to start the wave, then angrily curses the crowd when everyone tunes him out? That guy is every guy at the old Shea. 

Well done dude.  Now I want the Mets to go out and beat you effers every game this season.  Bring it on!

I'm in Clark Kent mode and haven't had much time but some quick thoughts:

I think the Phillies have the team Mets fans want.  As an outsider it seems like a bunch of scrappy guys, a homegrown hero or two and a shortstop who is actually good and not a stat accumulator.

I'm sure Fox is thrilled at the prospect of Phillies-Rays.  I like the Rays and all but that combination and 8:30 starts isn't going to get me to switch off the dvr.

I don't want to be Mushnick Junior but I observe that Son of Mets Police has watched zero innings of the playoffs.   I've watched about two.  I just don't care.

So Willie might go to the Yankees huh?  Girardi might want to open the new new stadium 15 and 0.

Willie might go to the Nats huh?  That won't be awkward at all for Manny Acta and his last place team.

Cyclones Fan suggested the Mets Police sponsor a brick at Citi Field.   They are sold out.  I'm kinda amazed the Mets won't sell more.

How long until Citibank merges or gets bought and the Mets wind up playing in Horribly Named Stadium?

So, I bought tickets to a game scheduled for 1:05 on Sunday.

ESPN, which hates children, moves the game to 8:05.   Sucks to be me.

If today's game is rained out, that game will be moved to Sunday 1:05.

So the people that wanted to go Saturday have to go Sunday.  The people who wanted to go Sunday afternoon have to go Sunday night.   Since the Saturday folks are screwed anyway, why not let the Sunday 1:05 folks go Sunday at 1:05?

If you are interested in um, "re-selling" your tickets at the official home of MLB scalping, they are going for $5.   There is absolutely no demand on Mets tickets.

I thought the season might have ended tonight at 7:46pm when the All Star blew it, but they pulled it out.



Now just 3.5 back and back to .500.  Tomorrow is a big game and a real opportunity to put the Phillies on notice, and at least get them thinking about you.



Looking ahead to the Mets Police this week - plenty about teams named Giants.  In about an hour I have an open letter from a football Giants fan to the ownership about the Personal Seat Licenses.



Then on Tuesday and Wednesday the Mets Police have done an investigation in to the baseball Giants, and wait til Fred Wilpon hears what we've uncovered!  He will never believe it!  

OK dude...you make all of us look bad.

All you had to do was visit Citizens Bank Park last weekend, when the Mets rode into town for a three-game series against the Phillies and won two of them before fired-up, standing-room-only crowds.

"I can't stand the Cowboys, and that will never change. But, to me, the Mets are the biggest enemy now,'' said Phil Markston, 34, of Wilmington, who had tickets for two of the three games.

"I've never liked the Mets, just because they're from New York and I don't like any of the New York teams,'' he said. "But now, after what happened last year, the Mets are the team I want to beat the most.''
